Located in a quiet residential area of Bengaluru, the clients who hailed from Coorg, were looking to build a 3 bedroom home for their growing family of 4. From incorporating ample greenery through framed views and an indoor dining court, to natural materials that would provide a rustic and authentic finish, the Court House ensured that every space is flooded with ample natural light and breeze flowing through it.
I have a secret fetish for all things process, recipes being the epitome of process diagrams! Hence there was a natural inclination from the very beginning to draw lots and lots of food! This obsession helped me improve my watercolour techniques, to be able to work with layers and depth and add all those flavourful colours that bring a dish to life.
A dream project that I find myself slowly inching towards – Illustrated India is a bunch of artworks and journal entries based on our travels across the Indian subcontinent. Currently we are working to bring these out in print format in an attempt to share excerpts of our experiences, learnings and realisations with the world. To urge you to travel, to encourage you to explore, to show you a glimpse of all that is waiting to be experienced and absorbed!
Zero waste or Sustainable living may be something that most people admire and want to emulate, but sometimes things may seem too daunting and tedious to follow consistently. But when broken down into smaller steps, things can seem much easier. Hence I began the 52 steps (weeks) to Green and Conscious Living series. These steps follow the same order in which Yasif and myself are trying to transition to a more conscious lifestyle, and methods that we have tried, adopted and have stuck to. Calicut Calling is a set of art works that depict my one year of life in Calicut, Kerala, whose theme is about rejoicing in the everyday. The works attempt to capture the journeys and untold stories of a culture and lifestyle that are an integral part of our daily lives. The body of work intends to provide one with the opportunity to pause, notice and appreciate the habitual things that we do, the people that we meet, the food that we eat, tracing the journey’s of the seemingly mundane. Curations that are a celebration of life as we know it!

Project : Infographics + Maps + Mug
India Hikes is one of India’s largest and widely recommended trekking community. My journey with them began in 2013 when I completed my first trek with their team, and then on began doing one off illustrations.
When you work on project briefs that require aesthetics to convey deeper visual information, every stroke and every line begin to fulfil a purpose and bear meaning. Illustrations for them include descriptive hiking trails, mug design and other infographics.

Project : Journal Design + Illustrations
To provide non-english speaking students with a user friendly career counselling format, was a challenge that student welfare director Nidhi Berera had set out to overcome. This project not only included front end illustrations, but involved intensive back end research. The task was three fold- understanding a students personality, gauging their skill set and interests and connecting all these to compatible career options. The booklet presented students with various visual scenarios that would help decipher each of the above criterions, facilitating a counsellor in giving career related advice.

Project : Illustrated terracotta tiles
Masons ink is an all-encompassing design and construction firm with special focus on Sustainable Architecture and Heritage Conservation. As part of their Hands on Heritage initiative their 2016 exhibition included a showcase on what heritage can mean to society at large, beyond being monuments to document.
The wooden stools of your sisters first home from 10 years ago that are now your side tables, the broken mug now filled with a money plant that reminds you of a lost friendship, the memorabilia of a vacation that your parents never took you to, the ink pen that you have managed to preserve since college – everything around us has a story to tell. This ongoing series is a tribute to those little things in life whose stories flash across our minds everyday, but haven’t been told and sometimes haven’t been discovered. Its a prompt to be appreciative of the little things in life. Its a reminder that happiness lies in the little things, and that we are never going to run short of it.
My interest in birds began in our home in Calicut. The lush greenery attracted birds of all shapes and sizes that I had never encountered before. Each bird I spotted brought with it a unique story, and an increased passion in ornithology. The Helm Field Guide ‘Birds of the Indian Subcontinent’ was to be my faithful companion for many a year to come and many a bird to spot.

Project : Journal Design + Illustrations
Slow Pottery is a potter’s initiative to slow life down through clay. As with all things, Nikita wanted to give her students a personalised pottery journal to use during their pottery course, that would be reflective of their philosophy and feel. The potters journal was an end to end solution – completely designed, illustrated and produced in house.

Bare necessities is a zero waste personal and home care brand and is also a hub for awareness on waste free living. The ZERO WASTE infographics provide examples of how one can adapt to waste free and sustainable living at home, at work, while travelling, while gifting and in the kitchen!

Kuthambakam is a visionary project, with an objective to create a model community comprising of EWS and LIG housing, that would uplift and improve the quality of life while also being self-sustainable. The 18 acre development would include Schools, Polyclinics and other Social Infrastructure.
The apartments range in size from 275sqft to 650 sqft. comprising of studio units, 1BHK & 2BHK units. End-users would be eligible for subsidy under the PMAY scheme, for those earning less than 6 lakhs per annum.

The project aimed at developing realistic design proposals for emergency response shelters in India. It sought to explore the role of an architect in a situation where the 3 paradigms- user, site and climate- were varied, in which case designs need to be more adaptable and flexible. The solutions seek to explore the possibilities of mechanism, form and material and most importantly that of relation. relation to people, to place, to region and to situation. These ‘homes’ however temporary, need to be able to build a relation with their users and with their surroundings.

From incorporating ample greenery through framed views and an indoor dining court, to natural materials that would provide a rustic and authentic finish, the Bojanna House ensured that every space is flooded with ample natural light and a breeze flowing through it.

Experiencing nature from every part of the home was a key feature desired by Mr. Avinash for his 4 bedroom family home in Parur. Spaces were built around multiple courtyards of varying nature – some open to sky, some protected, some as extensions of the interiors, while some were positioned to provide internal visual relief that served as appendages to external functions. With ample space left on the frontal and rear end for parking and a large kitchen garden, the tightly wound built spaces are a celebration of nature itself.
